All expatriates working and living in Qatar are required by law to undergo a health screening after landing in the country before they can receive a Residence Permit.

After landing in Qatar, the Medical Commission is responsible for conducting a health exam, the purpose of which is to protect the health of the population and prevent the spread of infectious diseases from newcomers.

Newcomers should first obtain a blood-type certificate from any clinic before undergoing the Medical Commission exam, which comprises a blood test and chest X-ray. Diseases being screened include:

    • HIV/AIDS
    • Tuberculosis
    • Hepatitis B
    • Hepatitis C

People working in restaurants, barber shops, laundries, health clubs and other public places are further required to under annual health checks.

The Medical Commission's office is located on Al Muntazah Street off E-Ring Road. Three other private hospitals are authorized to carry out the mandatory procedure for a fee:

The Supreme Council of Health has plans to open new facilities that are solely dedicated to conducting these tests. The first hospital targeting laborers will be established in the Industrial Area.

    Post Medical Screening

After completing the medical test, adults are required to register their fingerprints digitally with the Ministry of Interior. The fingerprinting headquarters is located on Salwa Road off the Industrial Area flyover. Other service centers are located in:

    • Al Khor
    • Mesaimeer
    • Duhail

    Driving

To drive in Qatar, you must obtain insurance and a valid Driving License. Car owners are also required to register their vehicles, and renew the registration annually.

The speed limit is generally between 60-100 kilometers per hour on most city roads. The maximum speed on highways is 120 kilometers per hour.

    Traffic Violations

The government is committed to reducing traffic violations and road accidents. Radars and cameras can be found on many roads and intersections. Plain-clothed police officers may also observe traffic at roundabouts and on highways.

    Traffic violations include:

    • Driving an unregistered vehicle.
    • Driving a vehicle without a valid Driving License.
    • Using a mobile phone while driving.
    • Driving over the speed limit.
    • Not wearing a seatbelt.
    • Running a red light.
    • Driving on the wrong side of the road.
    • Allowing children under 10 years old to occupy the front seat.
    • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
    • Not maintaining a distance of at least 50 meters from emergency vehicles.
    • Putting a load on a vehicle without adjusting it for safety.
    • Transporting a greater number of people in a vehicle than there are available seat belts.
    • Obstructing parking spots reserved for taxis or persons with disabilities.
    • Fleeing the scene after an accident.
    • Parking illegally.

Fines vary in price from QR300-QR6,000.

    Traffic Points

The Driving License runs on a point system. Drivers may accumulate a certain number of points for each infraction. License suspension occurs after a driver reaches 14 points in traffic violations. The suspension period is three months. Repeat offenders risk facing lower point thresholds, longer suspension periods and ultimately, permanent cancellation of their Driving Licenses.

More serious violations may require a trial and could result in imprisonment and deportation in addition to hefty fines.

    Postal Services

In Qatar, there is no organized system of street postal addresses for the home delivery of mail. Instead, citizens and residents rent mailboxes at their local post office station.

International and domestic mail delivery in Qatar is overseen by the General Postal Corporation – or Q-Post – an independent corporation that has been operating since 1950. A member of the International Postal Union since 1969, Q-Post offers a full range of courier and mail delivery service options.

    Post Offices

The head office of Q-Post is located on Corniche Road in Doha. This modern, five-storey facility is equipped with thousands of electronically-accessed mailboxes. The office is open to the public six days a week.

Across the country, satellite branches provide a variety of services of interest to travelers and residents. These include mailbox rental, international money transfer and passport renewal, and bill payments for companies such as Qtel and KAHRAMAA

    Postage Rate

Local mail delivery begins at QR0.50 per letter. Additional fees for parcels and larger envelopes are applicable.

    Mailbox Rental

Mailboxes can rent for the following annual rates:

    • Head Office: Q300 for Personal use and QR500 for companies.
    • Other Branches: QR200 for Personal and QR500 for companies.

New Subscribers are required to pay a refundable deposit of QR100 and QR60 for smart card or keys. You will need the following:
